What the broken link checker looks at
Internal and external links
Every link on the page is requested. 404, 410 and 5xx responses and dead domains count as broken; links behind bot protection aren’t falsely flagged.
Broken images
Images that fail to load leave empty boxes and hurt Google Images visibility.
Sitemap pages
Up to 20 pages from your XML sitemap are fetched, so you find broken pages that nothing on this page links to.
Links that redirect
Internal links that go through a redirect still work, but slow visitors down and waste crawl budget.
Issues it can find
Each one links to what it means and how to fix it.
Questions
How do I find broken links on my website?
Enter a page above. We request every link and image on it, plus pages from your XML sitemap, and list the ones that return an error, with the status code and URL so you can fix or remove each one.
Do broken links hurt SEO?
A few broken external links won’t sink your rankings, but broken internal links stop ranking signals from flowing between your pages, waste crawl budget and frustrate visitors, who often leave. Google treats a site full of dead ends as poorly maintained.
Why is a link that works in my browser reported as broken?
We only report clear failures: 404, 410, 5xx and domains that don’t resolve. Sites that block automated requests (401, 403, 429) or time out aren’t counted as broken, because the link usually works for people.
Does it check my whole site?
It checks the page you enter in depth and up to 20 more pages from your sitemap. For sites with thousands of pages, run it on your most important templates (home, category, product, article) to catch problems that repeat across the site.
