Broken external links

Medium priorityContent

Links on the page to other websites return 404, 410 or server errors, or point to domains that no longer exist.

What triggers this issue

  • One or more external links returned 404, 410 or 5xx, or their domain didn’t resolve.

Why it matters

Linking to dead pages frustrates visitors and makes your content look out of date. Expired domains can even be bought by spammers, turning your link into a link to spam.

Links that only fail for bots (401, 403, 429) are not counted.

How to fix it

  1. Replace each broken link with a working source, an archived copy (web.archive.org) or remove it.
