Broken pages in the XML sitemap

High priorityTechnical

URLs listed in your sitemap return 404, 410 or server errors, or their domain doesn’t resolve.

What triggers this issue

  • One or more of up to 20 sampled sitemap URLs returned 4xx or 5xx.

Why it matters

Your sitemap is a list of pages you’re asking Google to index. Broken entries waste crawl budget, show up as errors in Search Console and make Google trust your sitemap less.

They often point to deleted products or posts that still have links somewhere.

How to fix it

  1. Restore pages that were removed by mistake.
  2. Redirect deleted pages to their closest replacement, and remove them from the sitemap.
  3. Make sure your sitemap is generated automatically so deleted pages drop out.
