Missing, empty or multiple H1 headings
High priorityOn-page SEO
The page has no H1, an empty H1 (often an image with no alt text) or several H1s, so its main topic is unclear.
What triggers this issue
- Page has no H1 heading.
- The H1 heading is empty: it has no text, for example only a logo image.
- Page has several H1 headings.
Why it matters
The H1 is the main heading of the page. Visitors read it to confirm they’re in the right place, screen-reader users jump to it, and search engines use it to understand the topic.
Several H1s are allowed in HTML, but one clear H1 removes any doubt about what the page is mainly about.
How to fix it
- Give the page one H1 that describes its main topic, ideally including your main keyword.
- If your logo is wrapped in an H1, change that to a plain link and use a real heading for the content.
- Turn extra H1s into H2s.
