Canonical tag missing, conflicting or pointing elsewhere

Medium priorityOn-page SEO

The page has no canonical tag, several that disagree, or one pointing to a different URL, so Google may index the wrong version.

What triggers this issue

  • No canonical tag.
  • Page has conflicting canonical tags pointing to different URLs.
  • Canonical points to a different URL, so this page may not be indexed.

Why it matters

The same page is often reachable at several URLs: with tracking parameters, with or without a trailing slash, over http and https. A canonical tag tells Google which one is the main version, so ranking signals aren’t split.

Conflicting canonicals are ignored entirely, and a canonical pointing elsewhere asks Google to index that other page instead.

How to fix it

  1. Add one self-referencing canonical with the full, final URL of the page.
  2. Remove extra canonical tags so only one remains.
  3. Only point the canonical elsewhere when this page really is a duplicate.
