Why it matters

Layout shifts make people lose their place or tap the wrong thing when an image, ad or banner pushes content down. CLS is a Core Web Vital Google uses for ranking.

How to fix it

1. Give images, videos, iframes and ads fixed dimensions or a CSS aspect-ratio.
2. Reserve space for cookie banners and late-loading content, or overlay them.
3. Use font-display: optional or matched fallback fonts to stop text reflowing when web fonts load.
