Thin content: how much text does a page need?
Thin content means a page has too little useful text for search engines to understand what it offers or why it deserves to rank.
Why it matters
There is no magic word count, but pages with only a few dozen words rarely rank for anything competitive. Search engines need context, and visitors need enough information to act.
Text that is hard to read, with long sentences and complex words, makes visitors leave sooner, especially on phones.
How to fix it
- Check what the top-ranking pages for your target search cover, and answer the same questions, better.
- Add specifics: who it is for, prices, how it works, examples, FAQs, comparisons.
- Merge several thin, similar pages into one strong page and redirect the old URLs.
- Use short sentences and paragraphs, everyday words and descriptive subheadings.
- For pages that don’t need to rank, such as tag archives or thank-you pages, consider
noindexinstead.
