What is llms.txt and should you add one?
llms.txt is a proposed standard: a Markdown file at the root of your site that gives AI tools a short summary of who you are and links to your most useful pages.
Why it matters
AI assistants and AI search tools increasingly read websites to answer questions. A clear summary and a curated list of key pages makes it easier for them to describe you accurately and link to the right page.
It is still an emerging convention and isn’t used by Google Search for rankings, but it costs little to add.
How to fix it
- Create a file named
llms.txtat the root of your domain. - Start with an H1 of your site or company name, then a one-paragraph summary in a blockquote.
- Add H2 sections with Markdown links to your key pages, each with a short description.
- Keep it short and up to date. Use our llms.txt generator to create one.
